Applications Development Manager
General Summary
With general direction, define and produce technology-related business solutions. Establish and maintain a good working relationship with “Business Partners.” Within IS, advocate for and coordinate on behalf of the business partner to ensure that IS outputs meet the business partners' expectations with a schedule and at a cost that is consistent with the business partners' requirements.
Essential Functions
- Manage all activities associated with delivery to the business partners of automated business solutions. Ensure activities are in alignment with VSP and IS standards, including (but not limited to) project management, budgets, and cost distribution.
- Manage customer and internal relationships to ensure business partners’ business needs are clearly understood, then address and deliver as agreed. Similarly, manage business partners' expectations regarding the agreements for meeting business needs.
- Ensure effective communications are maintained within the unit, ISD, and business partners. When appropriate, inform employees about plans and progress. Conduct employee discussion sessions at regular intervals.
- Remain current on new technology and methods to ensure state-of-the-art and cost effective solutions to business processes.
- Educate business partners regarding applicable IS technology, functions, and processes that are available and practical to assist in achieving their business goals.
- Manage planning, scheduling, and status reporting to ensure sound project development, business process integration, and tracking.
- Coordinate training to ensure all departmental staff have appropriate skill sets and receive appropriate information/instruction.
- Monitor performance of approximately 12 direct reports. Provide prompt and objective coaching and counseling. Conduct performance reviews and recommend salary increases.
- Lead the process of interviewing and hiring for open positions within the unit ensuring that the most qualified candidates are selected.
Job Specifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or Business Administration or related field or equal experience
- Eight years of increasing responsibility and experience in developing and/or maintaining automated business applications
- Experience/Proficient in Microsoft .NET software (Visual Studio, Visual Basic, ASP, etc.) and Microsoft SQL Server
- Strong knowledge and experience in project management and Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) Management is required
- Microsoft certifications (MCP, etc.) is beneficial
- Three years management/project management experience in a mainframe, Client/Server, Web-based, or PC environment
- Excellent written and oral communication skills including the ability to present technical information in a user friendly format
- Excellent interpersonal skills to facilitate, educate, and build strong “business partner” and staff relationships
Working Conditions
The working environment is generally favorable, lighting and temperature is adequate, and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc.
This position is located in Irvine, California. The initial estimate of travel is 25% or less.
